Birding in Munnar

Munnar is one of my favourite birding spots, if you love to enjoy the magic of nature, Munnar is one of the best places. This blog is about my birding experience in Munnar with my friend Vimal. Vimal is a nature lover, bird watcher who is working as a Tour Guide and Bird Guide in Thattekad.

We started at Kothamangalam at 5.30 in the morning. Our first target was Eravikulam National Park, also known as Rajamala. Eravikulam is home to Nilgiri Thar, an endangered species of goat. Entry fee is 200 INR per head and 50 For Camera.

During the bus ride from the starting point, we can enjoy the beauty of tea plantation and beautiful landscapes formed by tea gardens and mountains. If we are lucky, trekking to the top of the mountain we can get a chance to see Nilgiri Thar. I was lucky to spot a few Nilgiri Tahrs.

We spotted a few birds in Rajamala. Indian blackbird, Malabar whistling thrush, blackbird, Juv. blackbird, Bulbul, Pied bush chat male, Black and orange flycatcher, Black Eagle, Kerela laughing thrush, Nilgiri Palm Squirrel.

We also spotted a few other birds in other locations. They are Orange minivet, Velvet fronted natach, Sunbird, Crimson backed sunbird, warbler, Indian black-lored tit, White-browed wagtail or large pied wagtail, Female Nilgiri flycatcher, Nilgiri flowerpecker, White-cheeked barbet, Pied bush chat female, White-rumped munia.
